A Austrian Black and Tan Hound Dog
Acknowledged to be a true descendent of the Celtic Hound, as with all breeds of older origin there is no authentic history for the Austrian Black and Tan Hound until the mid die of the nineteenth century, before which no controlled breeding took place. A universally popular hunting dog, this hound is especially suitable for heavy work on high mountains, as well as on flat ground. It is used in hunting for tracking wounded game, especially hare, by giving tongue. This is a medium-sized, strong breed which has a long cast, supple body and sensitive black nose. The long, tapering tail is slightly bent and the ears are of medium length, hanging flatly and rounded at the tips. The smooth, close-fitting hair is dense, full and springy, with a silky sheen and is about 2 cm (under 1 m) in length. Coloring is understandably important for this breed which is black with small, clearly defined light to dark fawn markings. The two fawn marks above the eyes, known as Vieraugl, must be present. Height is from 48-56 cm (19-22 in). |
