Barbet Dogs Calssification Information

An ancient European water-dog, the Barbet has most probably played an important part in the development of several other water-dogs. Once a very common water dog in Europe, the breed was used not only to retrieve water fowl from water, but also fallen arrows. Today it is used both as a gundog and frequently as a companion, but a lot of work is involved in keeping the coat clean so the breed is not usually kept as a house dog. The distinctively curled coat is highly waterproof and even the head and tail are covered with dense hair. The long, pendant ears add to the kindly expression of this attractive gundog breed.
