Explore all Basset Artesien Normand dog
Descended from the Old French Bloodhound and the St Hubert Hound, this breed is an ancestor of the Basset Hound better known in Britain. The Basset Artesien Norman originated, as the name implies, in Normandy but was divided in type, some with straight legs, other crooked. Since the formation of a breed society in 1910 it has been standardized and streamlined, blending attributes from both. The Second World War saw the breed's serious decline but it was saved from extinction.
Used to trail deer and small game such as rabbit and hare, the breed's short legs allow it to follow small animals on foot and to penetrate dense vegetation where larger dogs cannot go. Height is only 25—36 cm (10—14 in) and weight 14.5-15.5 kg.(32-341b),but this breed is still rather less heavy than its cousin, the Basset Hound. |
