Description about Berger de Picardie dog
Perhaps the oldest of the French shepherd dogs, the Berger de Picardie arrived with the Celts in AD 800. This herding dog was found on the farms of north-east France. Its numbers were greatly diminished by trench warfare in the Somme, and consequently even today it is still a rare breed. This is a good guard dog for farms and also a talented herder of both sheep and cattle. A substantial dog, ranging in height from 55—66 cm (21.5-26 in) and weighing between 23 and 32 kg (50-70 lb), this is a fairly long-legged dog with high, erect ears and thick eyebrows, although these do not shield the eyes. The thick, weatherproof coat needs care but is very appropriate for the lifestyle for which this breed is suited. Although it has a rather assertive disposition, the breed responds easily to obedience training and is renowned for reliability as a family member. |
