A Bernese Mountain Dog
One of (four varieties of mountain dog introduced to Switzerland by Roman soldiers 2,000 years ago, the Bernese was used as a draught dog by the weavers of Berne. A strong, sturdy working dog, compact in build and standing some 58-70 cm (23-27.5 in) high and weighing 40-44 kg (88-97 lb), this breed enjoys pulling light carts.
This is a farm dog, active, alert and a devoted family member. Temperament is self-confident, good natured, friendly and fearless. The strong skull and black coloring with rich, reddish-brown on the cheeks, over the eyes and on all four legs and the chest, with a long, quite wavy coat and natural sheen, makes the Bernese a really impressive dog. Its feet are short, round and compact, and the tail of this breed is bushy. The dog carries it raised up when alert or moving. |
