The Bouvier des Flandres
Descended from Flemish cattle dogs, in French Bouvier means herdsman, or might also be translated as oxherd or cattle herder. Found originally in south-west Flanders and northern France, the Bouvier des Flandres was originally used for driving cattle but in more recent times has been used in security work. A compact, powerfully built dog, the breed is well-boned and has strongly muscled limbs, giving the impression of great power without clumsiness. The Bouvier's lively appearance reveals intelligence, energy and audacity and the harsh beard is highly characteristic, giving a forbidding impression to this calm, sensible dog. The abundant, thick coat, ranging in color from fawn to black, and including brindle, is coarse to the touch and is meant to be unkempt-looking. Height is 59-68 cm (23—27 in) and weight 27-40 kg (59-88 lb). |
