Broholmer Related Information
The Bromholer was developed from a cross between English Mastiffs and local dogs in Germany. English royalty had given Mastiffs as gifts, while the German royalty had given their German Mastiffs to the Danes. King Frederik VII and his consort, Countess Danner, owned several Bromholers, and one of their paintings depicts the two of them with one of these dogs. The breed was first established in the early nineteenth century when it was moderately popular in Denmark, especially as a guard dog in homes of the wealthy. Numbers dwindled severely in the Second World War so that, in 1974, this was a breed which was targeted for revival by the 'Committee for National and Forgotten Breeds'.
This breed is a large one, standing at about 70 cm (27.5 m) in height and weighing in the region of 41-59 kg (90-130 lb).The coat is short and harsh, and the color can be light or brownish yellow, or black. Some white markings on the coat are also permissible. |
