The Canaan Dogs
One of the breeds more recently introduced to Britain, the Canaan Dog is widely accepted as Israel's national breed with origins going back to the pariah dog, the feral dog of the Middle East. By selective breeding a distinct breed type is evolving, and although only small numbers have been registered in Britain during recent years there are some interesting bloodlines which should prove valuable to the breed.
An alert, intelligent, confident and vigilant breed, the Canaan Dog is aloof with strangers but steady and loyal to its owners. Medium sized, the height is from 50-60 cm (20-24 in) and weight 18-25 kg (40—45 lb).The straight, harsh coat is of medium length but the high-set tail curled over the back is bushy. Colors can be sand to red-brown, white, black or spotted, with or without a symmetrical black mask. |
