Coarse haired Hound Dogs World
In the nineteenth century, hunters in Bosnia developed the Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound-Barak, and requiring an efficient scent hound, they used whatever dogs were available in creation. In 1965, the breed was registered with the FCI under the name Illyrian Hound, and the breed standard has been altered little since then. However, the name has changed to that used today. This is a robust dog with an expression described as serious, severe but playful, undoubtedly enhanced in appeal by the pronounced, bushy eyebrows.
Slightly longer than it is high, this dog stands 46-55 cm (18-22 in) and weighs 16—24 kg (35-53 lb). A lively breed with courageous and persistent temperament, this is a typical scent hound, and one that makes a good watchdog. The long, hard, shaggy coat has a tousled appearance and there is dense undercoat, which is good insulation in the tough weather conditions of the area. Basic colors are wheaten, reddish yellow, earthy grey or blackish but there are white markings or colors which can be combined in bi-color or tri-color. |
