The Dalmatian Dogs
Although the breed can possibly be traced back to India in the distant past, it is generally believed to have originated in Yugoslavia. The Dalmatian's development has been primarily in England where the breed was exceptionally popular as a carriage dog during the Regency period. The Dalmatian was a familiar sight running both beside and under all types of carriage, including those of the gentry, the mail coach and even fire engines.
Distinctively spotted with black or liver-brown spots on a white background, the coat is short, hard and dense, looking both sleek and glossy. The spots should not run together but should be round and well defined. Symmetrical in outline and free from coarseness, the height of this well-balanced dog is from 56.9-61 cm (22—24 in) while weight is generally 23—25 kg (50-55 lb). An outgoing, friendly breed, neither shy nor hesitant, the Dalmatian is capable of great endurance and so needs plenty of exercise. |
