The Eskimo Dog
An all-purpose haulage dog, the breed was traditionally used by the Eskimo (now known as the Inuit) tribe and falls between the larger Alaskan malamute and smaller Siberian husky in size. Expected originally to catch any prey, forming part of the dogs' own food ration, le Eskimo Hog is not a breed to keep with other livestock or dogs.
Early socialization of this dog is essential and traditional training methods are not always successful. With its powerful body, heavy impenetrable coat, and large bushy tail, there is a marked contrast in size between dogs and bitches, the former standing 58-68 cm (23-27 in) high and weighing 34-47.6 kg (75-105 lb) while bitches stand 51-61 cm (20-24 in) high with a weight of 27-41 kg (60-90 lb). All known dog colors or combinations of colors are acceptable in this breed. |
