Information a Finnish Hound dog
The Finnish hound is the result of breeding in the nineteenth century in which French, German and Swedish hounds were involved. As a result of this, the Finnish Hound has become the country's most popular working breed. Used for deer and hare hunting, the breed follows scent but it does not retrieve. Usually it leads huntsmen to game birds and woodcock which have been shot in dense cover. Now it is popular as a companion dog as well as for hunting. The Finnish Hound needs plenty of physical activity and seems perfectly happy to sleep outdoors during the summer months. The breed has a placid nature and is reputed to be good with children, although males often find it difficult to get on well with other male canines. The fairly harsh coat has a some length to it but it is still effectively short and does not need much attention to keep it in good order. The pendant ears are high-set and the head noble. Height is around 56—63 cm (22—25 in) and weight 20-25 kg (45-55 lb). |
