A Japanese breed which has rapidly become popular and well-established in the , UK is the Shiba Inu, a small, well-balanced, sturdy dog of spitz type, slightly longer than it is high. Lively and friendly in character, this breed is bright, active, keen and alert, often doing sudden things which take an owner by complete surprise. The Shiba, however, is docile and faithful and is understandably one of the most popular breeds in its homeland.
The triangular head is characteristic, while the eyes and ears are relatively small. Colors of this double-coated breed, with a thick curled or sickle like tail, can be striking, in red, black, black and tan, brindle, or white with a red or grey tinge. Average height is from 36.5-39.5 cm (14.5-15.5 in) and weight usually 8-10 kg (18-22 lb). |
