The Japanese Spitz Dog
Even the Japanese themselves seem confused about the origin of the Japanese Spitz, with theories varying considerably and too widely to outline here, though one simple theory is that the breed has been in Japan for centuries. A recent study concludes that various white spitz-type dogs are descended from the now-extinct German White Spitz.
This is an affectionate and companionable breed that can be slightly wary at first meeting with strangers but is alert, intelligent, bold and lively. The dark, rather oblique eyes of moderate size are oval shaped, and the small, angular ears stand erect. The profuse pure white coat is straight and standoff, with a dense undercoat, so care and attention are needed. The bushy tail is curled over the back. Dogs are 30-36 cm (12-14 in) high and bitches slightly smaller. This is not a heavy breed, weighing about 5—6 kg (11—13 lb). |
