Brief Description the Leonberger
From Leonberg in Germany comes one of Britain's more recent introductions, the Leonberger. Although not quite so heavy as its ancestors, this magnificent breed was originally produced using Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards, the monks of the Hospice of St Bernard having helped the creator of this new breed.
This dog stands some 65—80 cm (26-32 in) high. The slightly wavy, fairly long hair ranges in color from a light yellow, through golden to a red-brown, preferably with a black mask. And there can be dark or even black points on the coat. The skull is fairly wide and the dark, intelligent, medium sized eyes show no haw and have a good natured expression. This faithful, intelligent and amenable watchdog, with webbed feet and strong movement, was slow to gain popularity in Britain but has many valuable merits. Neither timid nor aggressive the Leonberger has a self-confident, equable temperament. |
