The Neapolitan Mastiff
The native mastiff of Italy, the Neapolitan is another ancient breed descended from the Roman fighting, war and circus mastiffs. The breed was used for guarding and dog fighting but is now owned for security and companionship. This strongly built dog has a very majestic bearing and is a devoted and loyal guard of both owner and property.
Despite this, it is reputed to be of reliable temperament, attacking only upon command. The skin fits rather loosely over the body, but although this a feature of the breed it should not be excessive. The coat is short, dense, even, fine and of hard texture with good sheen; the colors are black, blue, grey and brown, varying from fawn to red. The height of males is from 65 to 75 cm (26-29 m) and weight 50-70 kg (110-154 lb), bitches being somewhat less. |
