An Review on Newfoundland
Many believe the ancestor of the Newfoundland is the Tibetan Mastiff. The Newfoundland is a large draught and water dog with a natural lifesaving instinct and, in France; Newfoundlands are now used in teams to assist in emergency sea rescue work. In England, the breed was first shown in 1860 and recognized by the Kennel Club in 1878.
A devoted companion with an exceptionally gentle, docile nature, the Newfoundland is noble, majestic and powerful. With massive bone throughout, there is an appearance of strength and great activity. The large feet are webbed and the coat is double, flat and dense, as well as being oily and water-resistant, hence requiring regular grooming. Permitted colors are black, brown or Landseer, which is white with black markings. Average height for dogs is 71 cm (28 in) and for bitches 66 cm (26 in), and their weights are 64-69 kg (140-150 lb) and 50-54.5 kg (110-120 lb) respectively. |
