The Papillon Dogs
The extraordinary long-fringed, butterfly-like ears are the reason behind the breed's name, papillon being French for butterfly, but there is also a drop-eared variety called the Phalene, named after a night moth which drops its wings. On the Continent both varieties are called Continental Toy Spaniels.
A dainty breed with alert bearing and intelligent expression, the markings on the head should be symmetrical, a clearly defined blaze often resembling the body of a butterfly. Showing no aggression, always alert, lively, intelligent and friendly, this breed makes a fascinating and charming companion, and the abundant coat is reasonably easy to keep in good order. Height is 20-28 cm (8-11 in) and males, when finished with ruff and hind fringes, can appear rather longer than they are high. The weight of this breed is usually 4-4.5 kg (9-10 lb). |
