A Poodle Dogs
Although the poodle is divided by size into three different varieties in Britain, the history of the breed is common to them all. Under FCI rules there are four sizes, a Medium size (Caniche moyen) fitting in between the Miniature and Standard varieties.
Despite being widely accepted as a French breed, development of the Poodle began in Germany as the Water Dog or Pudel. Originally a large gundog, in Germany, these dogs were used to pull milk carts, so becoming stronger and heavier, while in France, where they were used mainly as companion dogs, the breed became smaller. The smaller Poodles also have a great reputation as circus dogs, especially in France, and the breed is renowned for being able to learn tricks with ease. At one time the Corded Poodle was exhibited, strikingly different in appearance from the curly coat seen today.
All Poodles, whatever their size, should be well balanced and elegant looking, with a very proud carriage. They are gay spirited and good tempered, their heads long and fine with a strong, well-chiseled foreface. Colors are white, cream, apricot, brown, black, blue and silver and in all cases clear colors are preferred. The profuse, curly coat does not moult and for exhibition at shows it is recommended that dogs are shown in traditional lion clip, although puppies are shown in what is termed 'puppy trim'. Standard Poodles are to be over 38 cm (1 Sin), their weight approaching 19 kg (42 lb) or sometimes more; Miniature Poodles are under 38 cm (15 in) but over 28 cm (11 in) and weigh about 12-14 kg (26-30 lb);Toy Poodles are under 28 cm (11 in) and usually weigh about 6.5—7.5 kg (14-16.5 lb). |
