Briefly Particular the Shar Pei
The Shar Pei hails from China where a great deal of written material was destroyed around 255 BC, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction where its ancestry is concerned. However, it is believed that the breed can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). The Tibetan Mastiff and Chow Chow are probably involved in the background of the Shar Pei, as are some other Molosser breeds and even, perhaps, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog.
On the South China coast, the Shar Pei was used for fighting but soon became a multi-purpose dog, used also for hunting and guarding game. Now primarily a companion dog, its temperament is calm and independent, and it is a very affectionate breed. A frowning expression and loose skin are characteristic but must never be taken to excess. The distinctive coat, found in a variety of solid colors, is short, bristly and harsh to the touch. Height is 46-51 cm (18-20in) and weight usually 16-20 kg (35-45 lb). |
